Two ways to skip the typing

Point the camera at the receipt, or say what happened out loud. Either way you get a draft to check, never a saved expense.

Items, tax and tip add up to the total. Check it and save.

Photograph the receipt

Tabrillo reads the merchant, the total, the tax and the tip — in any currency, in any language. It fills the form; you check it and save.

Reads every legible receipt correctly — 100% on total, tax and tip across a 30-receipt test set

76–86% of photographed receipts complete end to end; 13% time out and hand the form back rather than guessing

Free accounts get five scans a month. Splitwise puts scanning behind Pro entirely.

Both happen in the app, where the camera and the microphone are. A page can tell you what they do; it is not somewhere either one can be done.

Can you add an expense by voice?

“Dinner was eighty-four pounds, Sam paid, split evenly with Mia and Kai.”

One sentence, and every field is filled: amount, currency, who paid, who’s in the split, and the category. Type it instead if you’d rather — the same sentence works either way.

No other expense-splitting app does this.

Which phones and browsers can listen?

Speech is recognised by your own browser, so no audio leaves the device and nothing is recorded. Chrome, Edge and Safari can listen. Firefox has no speech recogniser at all — there the button asks you to type the same sentence instead, and it produces the same draft.

How do you split a receipt by item?

A scanned bill can be opened for claiming instead of split. Everybody taps the lines they had; the service and the tax follow in proportion to what each person claimed; nothing reaches the balances until every line has somebody against it. One scan, and the evening where three people did not drink stops being an argument.

The link goes to the group chat. Anybody can claim from it, including the people who never installed anything.

Tap what you had. The extras follow what you claimed.

What happens if it reads the receipt wrong?

Both fill in a draft you look at first. If the receipt is faded, folded or photographed at an angle and the numbers don’t add up, Tabrillo says so and hands it back for you to correct rather than guessing. A wrong amount in a shared ledger is worse than a slow one.

Questions about scanning and voice

Can an expense app read a receipt?

Tabrillo photographs the receipt and reads the total, the tax and the tip into a draft you confirm. It checks the arithmetic first: if the lines and the extras do not add up to the total, it says so and hands it back rather than guessing.

Can you add an expense by talking?

Say what it was, who paid and how to split it, and the form fills in. The audio never leaves the phone — what is sent is the text, which you can read and edit before anything is saved.

How do you split a receipt by item?

Open a scanned bill for claiming and everybody taps their own lines. Service and tax follow in proportion to what each person claimed, and nothing reaches the balances until every line has somebody against it.

What if the scan gets it wrong?

Both routes produce a draft, never a saved expense. Nothing is written to anybody’s balance until you confirm it, and the arithmetic is checked before you are asked.
